First, let's talk about what is not horoscope ...
It's rather surprising what most people understand when they hear the word "horoscope" - or maybe not that surprising, after all. Every single one of us has had the opportunity to read his/her "horoscope for today" in the newspaper, or to listen to some similarly informed forecast on the radio. And since they have never met with any other alternate option, this is their fixed idea.
Horoscope is not a tabloid forecast of what mood you are supposed to be in today
Horoscope is not your Sun sign (simplified as can be): I am a Cancer so I must like children
And what it is a horoscope?
Horoscope is a picture of Sun, Moon, and planets positioning in the skies at the exact date and time of your birth. The horoscope, or a birth chart, is a picture taken from a geo-centric point of view, since we are looking at the skies from planet Earth, and from an exactly specified spot on that planet. All components of the horoscope influence one another, and form mutual relations called aspects. Let's make sure we all understand we are talking about the symbolic level of mutual influence, based on the esoteric principle of synchronicity, rather than about physical relations. All mentioned components then create a specific planetary constellation.
And based on this entire picture you can then read the horoscope to gain rather complex and detailed personality portrait. However, it is very important to keep in mind that:
Each horoscope must be read and interpreted as a whole
A horoscope is an overall personality portrait, and must not be crumbled into a pile of isolated fragments. All that you can read from a horoscope has to be understood and interpreted in a given context. Let's say both me and my friend have Sun in Aries, and Jupiter in Aquarius - then we will certainly demonstrate some similar features but we will not be identical. Horoscope is not a mere compilation of fragmentary facts that you can look up in respective charts and books and that give you the exact meaning of a specific planet in a specific star sign or a house. This way you can recieve just a list of issues rather than a consistent and coherent human being description.
Your horoscope does not determine your life completely
Your horoscope, and the astrology as a whole, are not a fatalistic teaching on predestination of your life. Your horoscope helps you identify your disposition: your basic nature and temperament, your talents and weaknesses, your inner conflicts and highlights of your life. It can help you learn a lot about yourself, and handle the situation you are in. It can suggest what tasks are in front of you ... but it is only up to you to deal with it.
